I’m so glad you’ve landed on my website.

I am so passionate about the work I do. After 25 years of working in the medical and mental health fields I have seen the potential of the human spirit to rise above and grow through tremendous adversity.

I came to this career because I felt called to it. I met a therapist when I was 15 years old and dealing with a family tragedy. I was lost, confused, scared and did not know how to move forward with my life. It was the compassion of this individual and their ability to help me understand my emotional pain that enabled me to move forward. I knew at a very young age that I wanted to help people the way this individual helped me.

I have a keen interest in developing treatment that is unique to your needs. I tailor an approach that considers your current status, the issues you are dealing with, your goals, how you process information and what your presenting obstacles are. This requires us getting to know one-another well. I am trained in many different modalities of psychotherapy and often move seamlessly between them as the therapy process dictates.

The last ten years I have dedicated myself to specializing in treating complex trauma, including developmental and shock trauma. I have trained in Somatic work, particularly learning how the body holds our story and is a messenger. When we honour the body and listen carefully we can process issues efficiently and effectively. In addition, I have studied and trained in using, Yoga, Gestalt, Reiki, Healing Touch and Peruvian Shamanism and use these approaches to enhance your experience as you explore your inner self.

It seems that every time I go through something personally, I end up finding my way back to being creative. Like spirit channels healing through my hands, mind, body and soul via creativity.

Let’s discover this together. For me, it was first writing children’s books. Then it has been blogging thoughts about life. Now it is painting. What is it for you? Write me a line at jb@jenniferbrighton.com and tell me about your creative healing journey.

Is Psychotherapy Effective?

The effectiveness of therapy is highly dependent on the relationship you build with your therapist.  It is critical that you feel comfortable, connected, safe and respected, while at the same time, feel the therapist can challenge you in a way that brings new insights.  You also want to trust that your therapist has the ability to teach you new tools and techniques to better cope with your struggles.

The role of therapist can take many different forms during the process of treatment.  These roles will depend on the nature of your issues.  At times the therapist may be your educator, while at others your motivator and yet again they may be the person that is an active support.  The therapist is holding space for you to work through what is causing you distress or discomfort. Through this collaborative process you and the therapist will find ways that will bring relief and positive change.

For Psychotherapy to be effective you want to feel like you can comfortably open yourself up, allow the expression of your true emotions and know that your therapist can compassionately attend to your needs. When this kind of rapport develops you can work through your struggles, gain new insights and manifest the ability to change.

I have extensive training and many years of experience dealing with the complexities of human development, functioning and interaction, but most of all, it is my passion for what I do that has brought me great success in my career.  I will support and assist you, challenge you to move beyond your struggles, help you discover solutions and resolve underlying problems, but most importantly I will ensure you feel seen, heard and understood.

She has also completed certification as a Coaching Practitioner with the Coaching Federation. All this training leading to Certification with the International Coaches Federation.

Work Experience

Jennifer has over 20 years of experience in the medical and mental health systems. In Jennifer's pre-graduate years she began working at an adult drug rehabilitation centre as well as a local crisis centre. This is where she learned the true nature of what it meant to be a support person, advocate and counsellor.

Following post-graduate studies, she furthered her career working at an adolescent treatment centre and then moved on to the hospital system where the majority of her years were devoted to working in psychiatry. Jennifer also served as the Ombudsman for the same hospital, honing her mediation skills. Jennifer went on to work with The Mindfulness Clinic, based out of Toronto; a wonderful team of therapists devoted to wrapping all therapeutic approaches with a Mindfulness Philosophy. Jennifer was previously the Director of Program and Clinical Services at Horizon Counselling, Consulting and Training a centre that is devoted to helping adults work through childhood trauma. She also enjoyed working at the Halton Trauma Centre where she provided treatment services to children from ages 7 - 18 who experienced significant trauma.

Jennifer believes in giving back to her community and volunteered her services to Cameron Helps Charity (NFP). She was acclaimed as Clinical Director and for ten years she worked alongside a passionate group of committed members that saw the growth of CameronHelps from a small table to a large organization making positive changes. Cameron Helps' goal was to educate teenagers on how to recognize and get help when they are feeling depressed and suicidal. Their focus was and still is, physical health for mental health. As part of this venture, Jennifer did regular talks for parents or teens at high schools. Jennifer also supported the development of CameronHelps flagship program, TeamUnbreakable’s curriculum that included a focus on teaching coping skills derived from Dialectical Behavioural Therapy. Jennifer left in 2018 to start a new venture.

January 2018 Jennifer founded Exhale Academy for Healing & Personal Development. A centre that uniquely married Western and Eastern Philosophies for overall wellness. After having completed significant training in trauma recovery, it was clear that having one place an individual could go for holistic care would be highly beneficial. It was quite an impressive project and large undertaking.

Sadly in April 2019 Jennifer sustained a catastrophic brain injury by way of a car accident and as of October this year she has been unable to return to work. Her family, friends and colleagues rally around her. Jennifer has been very blessed that many of her colleagues have stood by her and have stepped in to help carry on her vision at her Oakville office. She has renamed the new office The Brighton Centre. You can learn more about the the Brighton Centre by following the link below. Jennifer is looking toward the day that she fully recovers and makes her way back to working with you again!

Jennifer is an avid learner and seeks out ongoing training and supervision to further her skills. She regularly consults with experts in her areas of interest. This is a wonderful asset for the client as you are benefiting from a wealth of shared knowledge.

There is no doubt that through her own current traumatic experience she will use this as an opportunity to learn and grow and envelop this into a way to bring it back into her work to help you in the future.
